Formation of a tornado |
The Steps of Tornado Formation. |
Step 1
First of all a supercell thunderstorm forms. A supercell is a system that produces a dangerous thunderstorm that contains rotating winds and it lasts for a long time. A supercell thunderstorm forms when cold air, which is a cold front meets with a warm air, which is a warm front. When they meet, the cold front which will try to go to the bottom will push the warm, moist air mass upward, this will result in strong updraft currents. An updraft occurs when air moves upward. As the updraft goes higher and higher, some currents of updraft are cooling down and they are condensing into clouds. After this, scientists are not exactly sure what happens, but they believe that some updraft will go through a variation known as wind shear, which is a change in wind direction and cause of the wind shear, a rotating effect will happen with the air going in a downwards and upwards pattern. Scientists believe the horizontal rotating effect happens when winds at two different heights blow at two different speeds to create a variation in wind direction.

Step 2
The second step in the formation of a tornado is when another current of updraft runs into a horizontal rotating wind. However, this may not happen and a tornado cannot form without this step. If this does happen the updraft will fasten the spin and speed up the rotation of the wind. From this a funnel cloud is created. A funnel cloud is a spinning funnel-shaped cloud that forms at the top of a tornado.

Step 3
The last step in the tornado formation is when a cold downdraft of hail, rain and air brings the tornado to the ground as it becomes tighter and tighter as it goes down. A downdraft is air moving downward and hail is a type of frozen precipitation that forms in layers. Once the tornado touches the ground, it will destroy anything in its path.

This is a video that will show how a tornado forms.
Next you are going to learn about what makes a tornado dangerous and what you can do to protect yourself.
